Grace, Amy, Lotti, Hazel, Earla, Phyllis, Ruth, Joyce, Sheila, Shirley, Janice, Rose are just some of the strong black women that raised a generation of strong black men. Strip away the stereotypes of our society in regard to black families and you will arrive at the facts. Black women need to be recognized and given their due. To raise children with love, hope, pride, determination and a strong sense of self is as difficult today as it ever has been. Black women are strong, wise, fierce and powerful. Thank you to the strong beautiful black women that raised me.

Race, race, race I am certain there is only one race, and it is human. What binds us is our DNA, of which eye, hair and skin colour is the tiniest of differences of markers in the overall chain. Funny how we attribute behavioural differences to skin colour, we have fallen in to a visual trap and like our forefathers who thought the world was flat, we haven't yet discerned the truth. What lies in our DNA has very little to do with how we choose to act. Choose humanity.

We live in disquieting times, so much anger and craziness on display and prevalent. We glorify it in social media.  You want it, it is just a few clicks away! Funny how that which we seek becomes our truth, becomes who we are! I take a minute, I step backand I sort out the crazy from the truth. Who I want to be, what I want to be, is at stake. For me, choice is the answer!, I choose what I want to be, what my personal brand is to look like. I acknowledge the crazy world and choose to be something less. I close my eyes and allow energy to flow through me, enlightening and empowering. I shun the confinement of my crazy world.

There are some that approach with a closed fist, indeed sometimes raised in hate, but I give thanks everyday that I was born in Canada, Raised by awesome parents and grew up in an awesome community. Most people approach you with an open welcoming hand.

There are double standards in life, truth be told they are all around us, but the opportunity to overcome them and be a functioning part of a country is stronger in Canada than most other places. Canada has a lot of growing to do, but at least it is growing and thriving, Canada is a great place to be!

I was struck by reports in America in the year 2016 some educational institutions where banning and expelling black students for having large afro hairstyles. Yup that was a seminal moment. When I recovered I painted this painting. Haven't we had enough of this, why is natural black hair so persecuted? Aren't there bigger problems that require our attention than hairstyles? How misguided are we really?

There are things about ourselves that we cannot change, disguise maybe, but we can’t really change them. They are coded in our DNA; how tall we are, our complexion or our physical attributes. These things we must embrace and accept, to do otherwise is a mistake.

However, things like how we think, our personality, how we treat others, where and how we live are all things we choose. As such, choice is our first and most powerful gift. We can choose to ride on the backs of others, or contribute in a meaningful way. We may not be giants, but we can walk that way.

In contributing, we transcend our personal limitations, and supersede them. It is simply a matter of choice, action and dedication.

Within each of us exist the choices to transcend or to retreat to safety.

What do you choose to see?

Our brain is wired around sight, it overwhelms us and too often we let our sight dictate how we perceive the world.

Sight, thought and actions.

Shouldn’t the truth be just the opposite! Shouldn’t we make better choices, and wouldn’t that put us in a position to see what we want to see? Wouldn’t that change what we are looking at?

Choose to see the person, before material things,

Choose to see their character before items of abundance.

As a boy, I remember my grandmother recounting the story of Atlas to me and how he took the weight of the world upon his shoulders.

Today’s Atlas is a person who bears the burdens of world: Discrimination, Poverty and Hunger. The weight of this collective burden is tremendous. There is no monopoly on pain and suffering,

But isn’t the opposite being true as well, no one should have a monopoly on opportunity, joy and happiness, why then is this in the hands of a few? Despite the hardships we all face, sharing in each other’s humanity affords us all a chance to collectively spread our wings.

“Hope”, “Belief” and “Desire”, are our wings. We must do more than hope for opportunity, we must believe that you have an equal right to it. We must desire with great effort. If we truly desire something, we should allow nothing or no one stand in our way.

I created this 8' painting as part of an installation. The painting depicts the strength and diversity that comprises a resilient "Black" Culture My assertion is that "Black" is a cultural gumbo, a cultural identity, that I can identify with. This challenges the notion that "Black" is a label based on one's complexion. Simply stated the painting states that "Black is" diverse in nature and united in its strength.

I look forward to the day when a person is valued for their merit and character rather than observation and initial impressions.

am very proud to have contributed this work to the "Where Are You From?" Installation

Inspired by recent events in my life and the fantastic works of Gustav Klimdt. This painting depicts a man adorned in gold trappings but the true wealth flows from his mind in the form of inspiration.

The truth it seeks to convey is that true wealth cannot be bought, and that it is only societal conventions that teach us to adorn ourselves in gold. Truly happiness is not purchased, it is grown internally in the mind, heart and soul of a being.

I admire strong women, I think because I grew up with so many examples of strength. I am not talking physical strength, although I wouldn’t tussle with them. No the strength I speak of is intellectual, spiritual emotional and a resilience of spirit that stories and songs could recount. We all experience trials and tribulations, there is no shortage of heartbreak in this world. What these women taught me is if you want to survive in this world maintain your compassion for people and love for life.

I have seen the women of my life cry, laugh and rejoice as if there were no tomorrow. I have borne witness of their experience, hardship and heartache visited upon them. And yet they survive. More than that they treat others with respect even though their hearts were breaking. They demonstrated humanity, vulnerability and a resilience beyond measure.

I will never forget my mother’s strength, the courage of my grandmothers or the council of my aunts. They gave me compassion for others. I think part of the wisdom of the men in my family was knowing that it takes strong people to negotiate and thrive in this world. They chose (were chosen by) their partners well, I hope to following their footsteps one day

I am a cyclical person. I have constants in my life like family, certain friends and my creativity, however every once in a while I reinvent myself. 2015 is clearly a year where I am reinventing myself. I suffered the losses of love and employment this year. I nearly lost my father. But I have gained many new friends, strengthened ties with older friendships and seen a resurgence of my creativity. In short I am undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts. Who and where I will be when I emerge from this chrysalis, I can’t say.

I feel the burning away of some old schemas and philosophies. I am also physically letting go of things. I am making creativity, health and positivity priorities in my life. Chrysalic Conversations is one stage in my process of changes - some subtle, some life-affirming.

This is the process of change, this change is not only internal, as it includes personal and long-term professional ambitions. Rather it is an intensifying, committing to and aligning of my purpose.

I look forward to the next twelve months - to a more creative lifestyle spreading my artistic wings and continuing to include good people into my life.

I love to dance, I always have!  This one time I had a particularly heavy heart, it was late summer and although the temperature was warm enough and the trees where still green, but there was a slight chill to the breeze. As if fall was whispering sweetly to your heart, “I am coming!”. I had decided to go for a walk along Montreal’s Lachine Canal, somewhere close to the Atwater market if my memory serves me correctly. As I walked I pondered recent events and how they had brought about a pall on my heart. After a while I grew tired and sat on a bench. It was late afternoon now and I imagined people where busily wrapping up their day looking forward to their journey home. To a place where someone would be lovingly waiting for them.

Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a lone roller skating individual a fair distance away. Clearly this person was accustomed to skating as the motion of his skating was at once athletic and full of joy. To be clear it was less a form of locomotion and more a competent display of rhythm motion. I watched out of the corner of my as if not wanting to disturb this Rasta dancer. Clearly in a world of his own, moving to the music of a phantom band. It was marvellously entertaining to watch. And discreetly I watched as he approached and was amazed at how infectious his joy was as it became my own. When he approached the bench upon which I was sitting he spun and stopped with a flourish as if to say, “Tag you are it!”. He knew that I was watching and we shared a laugh! We then spoke about the wonderful day and all the truly inspiring things that made it so. After a while we parted as old friends do to go our own separate ways. What an awesome chance encounter.

As I walked Home, the wind was less chilled and the cloud around my heart had dissipated. The summer seemed especially long that year. I never saw my friend again but the lesson he imparted will never be lost.

“I have always loved dragonflies!”, I expressed to a friend, as a dragonfly lit very close to where we were sitting. “That is because they tell the best stories” quipped my friend.

This struck me, because years before, I heard an old wise tale of how dragonflies were tasked with carrying history forward. I was very young when I first heard this, and it stuck with me. The following poem and painting are my interpretation of this old tale.

Like a swarm of dragonflies

Recounting tales from an ancestral sonnet

Of the countless who walked this path.

We are the sum total

Of the fears, hopes, trials and triumphs

Of those who came before us.

Our aspirations will pen a new verse

In the ancestral heart song that empowers all

Of those who will follow us.

How they measure us matters not,

The challenge is ours to contribute a verse

         Worthy of our ancestral sonnet.

Sometimes you meet someone whose spirit belies their age, I have several friends who personify a youthful spirit. My grandmother and my father in particular had this quality. They imparted wisdom to me, yet always seemed much younger than their chronological age. A little while ago I was creating a painting for a group exhibit with autumn colors. I immediately thought of two people, my grandmother whose youthful personal always warmed my heart and a friend whose happiness and youthful spirit always made me smile. The two of them came together in this single painting.

The painting depicts a woman a woman joyfully catching leaves as they fall off a tree. Personally growing up in Montreal I always enjoyed walking through the forest on a bed of autumn leaves. I used gather huge piles of leaves and dove in over and over again. When I grew tired I would simply cover myself in the leaves and take a nap.

From the time before we are born we are engaged in the act of learning, growing, adapting. It is one of the primary tenants of being alive. How much better would it be if we could continue learning at the rate a child of 24 months can learn and grow? How interesting would it be if we could unlearn some of the things that distract us from growth? This painting not only describes an earth goddess, but is a metaphor for personal growth.

Goddess Series: Wind

Medium        :           Acrylic

Size              :           24”W X 48”H

Price             :           $2300

Inspiration:

Observation for the day: the wind goddess gives us an intriguing real-life story of the hurricane and the butterfly. How is it butterflies survive these awesomely terrifying powerful events? We normally see butterflies as these beautiful fragile insects. How is it that this fragile beauty thrives in storms that level buildings and towns?

Think of it, butterflies are barely capable of prolonged flight, yet can manage to survive a hurricane. Such a wonderful example of skill, perseverance, and luck combining to inspire.

Do you think if the butterfly comprehended the enormity of the force rallied against it, it would simply choose “No”?  Why would we ever give up on our dreams when even the fragile butterfly can achieve its dreams?

Perhaps the wind goddess holds back her forceful gusts or perhaps the wind goddess tests the butterfly or perhaps only one out of every thousand butterflies survives. The point is wouldn’t you rather be the one that achieves his or her dreams. I would, and I hope you follow your dreams as well!

Price             :           $2300

Inspiration:

When we think of Fire we think of passion. Sometimes we use this word a little too lightly. To be passionate about anything you must believe in it without doubt, with all of your being - otherwise you are really just showing interest, or even worse, faking it.

IF to be passionate means to act with all your being; emotionally, spiritually, physically and cognitively, THEN do what you say and say what you do! If all four components are present then you achieve a level of focus that qualifies as passion.

Being passionate about anything is an intensely powerful way to be, it is a time stopper; when a base jumper commits to that first step that is proof of passion. When a singer commits to her song she is passionate about it. Or, when someone practices/ trains for a period of time to achieve a high level goal, and finally achieves that goal they experience euphoria - that is passion. It is a fire of determination fueled by all aspects of our being.

Passion is one of the strongest meditations we have available to us. We should strive to find what that is for us and have at least one passion to work towards in our lifetime. Wouldn’t that be great? Wow, that would be awesome!

Price             :           $1800 - SOLD

The water goddess teaches us adaptability. Water by its very nature is infinitely adaptable, it can be a solid, liquid or gas. As such its constant motion and adaptability mesmerizes us. Who hasn’t stood on a beach mesmerized by the persistent crashing of waves? Watched with awe, a water spout, waterfall or geyser, marveled at the clarity of tropical waters and feared murky depths. The greatest power on earth has captured more than just our imagination it has inspired us. We can learn much from this ever-changing goddess.

We can learn from the water goddess because we can apply adaptability to our everyday lives. If we realize that our lives are constantly changing then we can embrace the change and not fear it.

Inspiration:

I used to love running, not jogging, running! Correction I used to love running and jumping! As a child my brothers and I would race our father to the parked car, or I would jump over small beds and small cars! The joy or competition was evident from an early age. Later I briefly ran track at on the high school team. It was then that SCA and asthma taught me the limitations of my addiction to speed. As I aged, apparently the flat out bursts of speed I desired created such an oxygen debt, that my oxygen challenged system was and is unable to bear. Now my joints hurt, my body has swelled with years and is gravity challenged . . . but, I still enjoy sneaking a burst of speed now and then. Running and jumping are the closest I get to self-propelled flight and it is glorious. I love running because it is freedom from gravity and pain. It is like time and gravity slow down enough for me to catch up. I dream of running, I love running, I am the runner!

Someone asked my how long it takes to create a painting? Truthfully, yes there is a chronological and physical component to creating my paintings and sculptures, but really how long does it take for an idea to germinate and mature into a product. Some people work their entire life towards a single outcome or goal.

I started this particular painting over twenty years ago. It is a narrative: a celebration of knowing where you came from and dreaming of where our progeny will go. Of the experience of growing older and wiser with someone by your side. It is a painting of the dance of life. If I could do a painting that was a tapestry of all that is important to me this would be it.

It features me and my siblings, the two men I hold dearest in this world.

This painting will never be complete because I will not be there to complete it, How could I? If this painting represents my life then I sincere doubt I will be there to brush the final verse

The many forms of energy intrigue me. Sometimes, while meditating, I turn inward to visualize the energy flowing through my body in an effort to support its healing.

Why is it when we are doing things that align with us, time flows so quickly, yet when we do less favourable chores time drags on and on? When I am in a creative groove time flies, and energy flows, my hands are positively warm, hunger stops and my peripheral vision narrows. I am focused!

When I achieve this state and choose to meditate instead of create, I feel as if I become a conduit of energy. It is like standing peacefully watching a beautiful sunset, or watching raging surf crash upon a seawall during a storm.

We are connected to this energy, we contribute to it. Shamans and Healers have used these energies since before recorded time. We can receive this energy to heal ourselves and those around us.

I was inspired to create two tri-panel painting to illustrate the flow of energy. This and “Energy Flow”, depict our relationship to the energy around us.

Price               :           $3600

Inspiration:

I have loved many friends but have seldom fallen in love. To be honest I don’t fall in love, I grow to love.

It takes me getting to know someone for me to love them - truly, madly, deeply. I have no doubt people legitimately fall in love. I am capable of love, I just don’t fall in to love.

I created this poem and painting to describe what it would be to “fall in love” to the point of adoration.

“Je t’adore”, greater than this humble vessel can truly say.

I realize I love you when we breathe the air we share.

Genuinely, I adore you more and more each passing day.

“Je t’adore”, because you birthed life’s most intimate dare.

“Je t’adore”, when first we caught a glimpse, and time slipped away

I know I love you as gold loves silver, as the stars love the moon.

I adore when we stop and notice with surprise, the passing of a day.

“Je t’adore”, the days and nights, when my thoughts and courage swoon.

“Je t’adore”, as if never having seen these things before.

As if lost in that moment when creative minds pause to take a breath.

Truthfully, your heart and courage I adore, you are loved and so much more.

“Je t’adore”, when these enduring passions escape my heart’s depth.

These adorations I feel of, speak of and share will no doubt conspire,

Through time, tribulations and trust,         to this heart a love will inspire.

To be clear, like most people of colour I am very comfortable in my skin. When people assume that a description has relevance to who you are as a person, they place limitations on that person. Physical description is one thing, when it comes to merits of character, that is quite another.

Am I a Black Artist? Emphatically “No”! I am an artist who happens to be black, but the subject of my art has less to do with the colour of my skin than spirituality and the human condition.

The colour and richness of my skin is pretty apparent, but that does not limit my thoughts, goals or dreams in life. I have made the conscious choice to look beyond the physical to see a person’s actions and convictions as the person.

Can a touch be black?

Or a kiss be white?

How is an illness different if I were brown?

Would I have to love you differently if you were yellow?

And if we shared a laugh would it be more or less genuine with gender?

And should I take your critiques more seriously if you are older?

Do thin people feel despair more deeply?

Or is my size a determination of ambition and drive?

I recall how you made uptight friends loose and held loose friends accountable. More than anything I recall how you made me feel like I was your best friend.

You may not be able to recollect these things but all of us who love you will never forget. You have inspired and comforted more than you could possibly realize.

     Moments of laughter

     And years of pain

You taught me right from wrong

     How laughing at myself

     And being true to myself

     A smart man becomes strong.

I know of strength of Character

     Because you exemplified character

Not perfection, but perfect for me

     Many times we did argue

Of bones of contention, I do rue

The days when you got me

I love and miss you Charles, thank you for being “the man”!

One of those things I am always struggling with is how to live in the moment.  I try to let the past be the past, but I am not always successful. It is difficult sometimes to “forgive” people’s trespasses. Often rumblings of the past arise because of the mental gymnastics going on in my mind as I try to cope with “the appropriate response” to a given situation.

For instance, is it important to call bullshit on every slight or trespass against you? After all, if someone steps on your toes and you don’t tell them, “That’s not cool”, aren’t you just inviting them to do it again and again? If you do tell them, “Excuse me that is my foot”, is that the correct level of response to their actions - Careless? Reckless? Challenging me? or Just plain mean spirited? Alternatively, if I hesitate in responding, then the variations of my responses multiplies even further.

Finally, my ruminations land on “No! I think if I just react honestly then my genuine response cuts through all the BS. Then others have to deal with their own gymnasium. If I take this approach to everything, we will be just fine”.

It is not about past failures

It is not about past triumphs

It is not about those who seek to drag us down

Or those of you who cheerfully lift us up

     Tempering fears with dreams.

It is not about what you have done

Or the things you desire to do.

Stop reacting with a contrived act.

It is about who we are

In the now in the here

Being present and acting with integrity.

We are in a constant state of flux. While our body remains our body, we are capable of changing it, healing it, shaping it into a vehicle of our choosing. I am not who I was 20, 30 or 40 years ago. There are many methods available to us, however I would contend that the mind is the best place to start. As I change and grow I challenge myself to be a better person.

I was given a conscious so I try to consciously act. My parents always stressed that “going along with the crowd is a waste of a good mind”. Ask yourself what is important to you, why is it important, and what are the consequences of your action Think what you love, act in a conscious way and this will be the best “body of work” you can offer.

Think that you can, and you will be! Work with your reality and you will find peace of mind, success and happiness. Thinking is achieving!

One evening I contemplated the fact that humanity evolved and somehow migrated from Africa to the far reaches of the world. What a triumph that is, to think that tribes of nomadic peoples journeyed powered by their own fortitude across thousands upon thousands of miles.  When you think of it they had themselves and their ability to harness the elements to propel them. They used their knowledge of the stars and beliefs in beings from the heavens.

Was it necessity or curiosity that drove them? Certainly necessity and curiosity fuels our greatest triumphs. We know that fear and its sibling envy are responsible for many great travesties plaguing humanity. Imagine taking all those drivers and aligning them to the betterment of humanity everywhere. What glorious accomplishments might we heap upon history?

How we might lift up those less fortunate than ourselves instead of exploiting them, There is very little we can’t accomplish if we put our minds to it. Imagine if we stood up and proclaimed, “I am human! And these are my people!”. Such unification of spirit could give cause to all the higher ideals we all profess to cherish, but fall short in realizing. Imagine the combined strength our humanity aligned. The energy flow would be tremendous, we literally would be glorious!

Is unbiased unification what we need to reach the stars? And join our brethren claiming our corner of the universe amongst the celestial beings.
